HyMap Image, 18.6.2000, false colour composite, displayed as red, green and blue
The image is part of the transect scanned by HyMap for the SHAC project.
- Peat is shown clearly in shades of green.
- Information on peat composition can then be extracted from these different hues.
- Mineral soil is cyan (light blue-green).
- Other combinations of the 126 bands enable peat and mineral soil to be much better discriminated, but the colours have been chosen to match those of the Landsat TM image.
- Vegetation types are discriminated more easily than on the aerial photo. This is because invisible light in the near infrared and mid infrared have been used (find out about invisible light).
- Plants reflect strongly in these bands and there are pronounced differences between types of vegetation which are expressed as different colours on the image.
- The combination of many narrow bands and good spatial resolution (small pixels) makes it better than Landsat TM for peat and vegetation mapping.
