1. summary so far

To repeat - images are easy to use, but that also means they are easy to use badly. Before you place an image on your site ask yourself:

  • why is this image here? What role is it playing?
  • am I using the right type of image file format for the job?
  • is the image a manageable size? If not, should I be using a thumbnail?
  • if the image is purely decorative, is it going to detract from the text? If it's informational, am I making it clear to the reader what the image is, via the use of a caption or other method?

The online teaching materials should be read as soon as you can after completing this lecture. They will give you important technical information which tells you how you can successfully achieve a lot of the effects you've seen in this lecture.

2. moving on

This lecture has only started on the subject of images. If you move on to do the Advanced Web Techniques option we will look at more advanced image techniques including:

  • using images as navigation "buttons"
  • defining an image "map", which means that different parts of the image can be used as links to different places
  • making an image "roll over", that is, change when the mouse pointer is over it.

Most of this material comes in lectures 7 and 8.

The remainder of this lecture deals with topics which are nothing to do with images. When moving from one subject on to a completely different one it is often helpful to stop for a minute or two and gather one's thoughts - so take a minute to do that now. When you feel ready, move on to the next slide.
