This large (35ha) landslide at Castleton has been active for at least the last 3000 years.
The main A625 road used to run across landslide deposits (shown below). The slope is very active, and will move regularly in response to heavy rain.
Parts of the A625 was removed during a large landslide in 1974. It had to have major works carried out regularly when wet years led to further landslides. After a large slide in 1977 (following the dry summer of 1976 and heavy rain in the winter of 1976/77) the road developed large steps in the carriageway. The road finally closed in 1979.
