Peat humification at Hern Stones

Peat humification at Hern Stones

On the left of this photo a large v-shaped gully has cut through the landscape, separating the haggs on each side.

Hollows link together to form the intricate drainage network which can be seen in the background of the photo, dissecting the landscape.

The different colours of peat are due to the degree of the peat's humification (how much the vegetation is decomposed/ broken down).
The lighter, yellow peat in the foreground is poorly humified.
The darker brown peat is in more advanced stages of decomposition. Its rough mottled appearance is due to erosion by frost heave (continual freezing - thawing and refreezing of the soil)
