Revegetation at Bleaklow

This photo is taken looking north, towards Longdendale.

Eroded peat at Bleaklow Head

Bilberry is the only truly successful species in this area, as its shallow roots enable it to colonise thin peat soils and re-establish itself after fire.

In the foreground of the photo, rocks and boulders have been exposed where the layer of peat has been totally stripped away, exposing the mineral soil beneath it.

The bare, exposed peat has a cracked appearance as it is washed down from nearby hag.
