Statistical analysis: standard deviation and variance
- One of several indices of variability
- Used to characterise the dispersion among the measures in a given population
- Numerically the SD is the square root of the variance
- Variance indicates how far from the expected value the measures in a population are
- Unlike the variance the SD can be easily visualised as a distance along the scale of measurement
- Simply put, SD is a measure of the degree of dispersion of the data from the mean value
