Statistical analysis: standard deviation and variance

  • One of several indices of variability
  • Used to characterise the dispersion among the measures in a given population
  • Numerically the SD is the square root of the variance
  • Variance indicates how far from the expected value the measures in a population are
  • Unlike the variance the SD can be easily visualised as a distance along the scale of measurement
  • Simply put, SD is a measure of the degree of dispersion of the data from the mean value
