Fatty change
Appearance of fat vacuoles in cells represents absolute increase in intracellular lipids
Pathogenesis of fatty liver
Normally lipids are transported to the liver from adipose tissue and from diet
- Adipose tissue - released and transported as free fatty acids
- Dietary lipids - transported as lipid particles (triglycerides, phospholipids and proteins) or as free fatty acids
- Free FAs enter hepatocytes and some are converted to cholesterol
- Excess accumulation of triglycerides occurs due to defects in sequence of events of entry and lipoprotein exit
