The analytical expression commonly used to describe the energy resulting from this interaction is

in which b and a are constants for two interacting atoms.

Notice that this repulsion term is very small at large values of the interatomic distance, R.

The second van der Waals force is the attraction that results when electrons in the occupied orbitals of the interacting atoms synchronize their motion to avoid each other as much as possible.
