Chemical Engineering Stars

Chem. Eng. Stars deck, a Top Trumps style game, featuring 30 diverse chemical engineers who have shaped the field. Cards includes a short profile celebrating individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, showing a global, inclusive discipline – this is the opposite experience of students as nearly all chemical engineering named equations are named after white European men.

This initiative addresses the challenge of embedding EDIA meaningfully into STEM identity, moving beyond traditional lectures or posters to an interactive, student-created learning tool. Chemical engineering’s historic lack of visible diversity means that students often struggle to see themselves represented in the discipline’s story.

The Chem. Eng. Stars deck offers an innovative solution by making representation tangible, fun, and shareable. Rather than a one-off campaign, it builds EDIA into playful learning, mentoring, and outreach activities. The approach reimagines how inclusivity can be communicated through games, storytelling, and peer-to-peer interaction.
