Research project:

Foam fractionation has a potential to be a low-cost separation process. The operation of foam fractionation is commonly carried out by bubbling gas from the bottom of a column. As consequence, bubbles will move upward along the column. As bubbles rise, surfactant will attach onto their surface. The principle of foam separation is then based on adsorption of solute due to difference of surface activity. Despite its broad application in industries, the operation of foam fractionation column has not been extensively studied.

My research project will investigate the following areas:

  • Characteristics of surfactant mass transfer between falling and rising liquid streams in a foam fractionation column operating with reflux.

  • Foam drainage characteristics of a foam fractionation column operating with reflux involving bubble collapse, bursting and coalescence within the column.

  • Kinetics of surfactant adsorption at the gas-liquid interfaces.

  • CFD modelling of the system hydrodynamics coupled to the model of surfactant mass transfer.
