Turbulent flows have their limits

Dr. Rich Kerswell, Dept. of Mathematics, Univ. of Bristol

I will discuss a variational approach to turbulence which seeks to obtain rigorous bounds on physical quantities in turbulent flows. In particular, I will focus upon the issue of whether there is a maximum rate of energy dissipation in a plane layer of fluid sheared by its bounding plates. Both old and new literature will be reviewed and a unified way forward revealed.
