Error analysis in singular perturbation theory

C.J. Chapman, Dept. of Mathematics, Univ. of Keele

This seminar presents a method for estimating errors in singular perturbation expansions. The method depends on the construction of a `tableau', the existence of which is guaranteed whenever a matched expansion exists satisfying Van Dyke's matching rule, and leads to a method of constructing composite expansions. For the resulting composite approximate solution to a problem there is a mathematical theory which provides an estimate of its accuracy. In the seminar the tableau will be related to topological exponential asymptotics and to Newton's method, and will be constructed explicitly in a simple example involving root splitting in an algebraic equation. The speaker will suggest that the tableau provides a powerful but hitherto unused tool in singular perturbation theory.
