The idea that the nonlinear nature of the speech generation process can be exploited to provide better speech synthesis and recognition systems is still controversial in the speech community. The talk will presents results of work at Edinburgh which has utilised concepts from nonlinear dynamical systems theory to study and describe the speech generation process. It will also show how this approach has led to techniques which can be used for pitch marking and speech synthesis.
