Nonlinear Shell Theory:

Geometrically non-linear shell theory is concerned with the mathematical description of thin walled elastic structures undergoing large deformations.

The figure below shows an example of a strongly deformed cylindrical tube which has buckled in three lobes (see the cross section through the tube, shown in the insert in the top right hand corner of the figure).

The highly non-linear shell equations were discretised with a Finite Element Method and solved with a direct Newton-Raphson solver. A displacement control method had to be used to handle the snap-through behaviour frequently displayed by shell structures.
