D: Technischen Universität München

A postdoc will be employed at the University of Technology in Munich
(TUM) for up to 2 years. The research will focus on the analysis of
infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems in continuum mechanics. This
comprises Hamiltonian models for the dynamics of inviscid fluids, such
as certain shallow water models, and Hamiltonian models in elasticity
theory describing the dynamics of elastic rods or shells. Subject of
the research will be the derivation of such models (starting from
Eulers equations for inviscid liquids in the case of fluids or from
the equations of 3d elasticity in the case of elastic rods and shells)
and the analysis of relative equilibria and relative periodic orbits
by applying methods from Hamiltonian bifurcation and stability theory.
The occurence of chaos in the dynamics of these models will also be
investigated. The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by
Prof. J. Scheurle, assisted by Dr. H.-P. Kruse. Prof. Ratiu (Lausanne)
will act as co-supervisor and Prof. Chossat (Nice) will provide
further assistance.

A postdoc will be employed at the University of Padova for 2 years to
work on the integrability of non-holonomic systems and on the study of
small perturbations of them. The postdoc will be supervised by
Dr. F. Fassò. The postdoc will combine geometrical ideas about
the integrability of differential equations (e.g. geometry of
fibrations by invariant tori, connections with symmetries) and more
analytical ideas and techniques from classical perturbation
theory. For the first aspect, the postdoc will regularly interact with
Ratiu (CH), who will act as co-supervisor, and with Cushman
(NL). Regarding the second aspect, the postdoc will benefit of the
presence of an active research group in perturbation theory in
Padova. The project is a long term one, in a new developing field, and
it is necessary to have a full-time postdoc working on it.

NL: University of Utrecht

A postdoc will be employed at the University of Utrecht for 2 years to
work on KAM theory for perturbations of two degree of freedom
Liouville integrable systems with monodromy. The postdoc will be
supervised by Dr. R.H. Cushman, assisted by Prof. Dr. H. Broer. The
postdoc working on this project will be required to combine knowledge
of KAM theory and geometry of integrable systems to study the quantum
monodromy of specific systems. Assistance in these aspects will be
provided by Fassò (Padova, I), Sadovskii and Zhilinskii
(Littoral, F2), and Vu Ngoc (Grenoble, F2). In particular Fassò
will act as co-supervisor. The project requires a full-time postdoc in
addition to substantial contributions from Cushman, Broer and the
other collaborators listed above.

UK1: Warwick
A postdoc will be employed at the University of Warwick for 2 years to
work on bifurcations of RPOs of molecules. The postdoc will be
supervised by Dr. R.M. Roberts, assisted by Dr. I.N. Kozin. The
postdoc working on this project will be required to combine local
bifurcation analysis, numerical computation of global bifurcation
diagrams, classical and quantum studies of normal forms for dynamics
near RPOs and application to specific molecules. Assistance in these
aspects will be provided by Chossat and Montaldi (Nice, F1), Reich
(Surrey, UK2) and Leimkuhler (Leicester, UK2), Sadovskii and
Zhilinskii (Littoral, F2) and Tennyson (UK1), respectively. Montaldi
will be the co-supervisor.

UK2: University of Surrey

A postdoc will be employed at the University of Surrey for 2 years to
work on long time geometric integration methods. The postdoc will be
supervised by Dr. S. Reich. The postdoc will be required to combine
analysis and numerical computations of Hamiltonian systems. Assistance
will be provided by Leimkuhler (Leicester, UK3), Fassò (Padova,
I), and Wulff (Berlin, G). The co-supervisor will be Leimkuhler.
