GAGs
- Polysaccharide chains are hydrophilic
- Too stiff to fold into compact structures
- Therefore GAGs have highly extended conformations
- High density of negative charges attract cations such as Na+
- Osmotically active so matrices have large amounts of water
- Swelling pressure enables matrix to withstand compressive forces
