Extracellular matrix

The ECM is a complex structural entity, surrounding and supporting cells. It is the major component of connective tissue and is composed of 3 major classes of biomolecules:

  • Structural proteins: collagen and elastin
  • Specialised proteins: e.g. fibrillin, fibronectin, laminin
  • Proteoglycans

Variations in the composition of different ECMs give rise to a variety of forms, adapted to different functional requirements.
