Fas ligand
Procaspase activation can be triggered from outside the cell
This occurs by activation of death receptors on the cell surface
- Killer lymphocytes produce Fas ligand
- Binds to death receptor protein Fas
- Clustered Fas proteins recruit adaptor proteins
- These bind procaspase 8
- These activate downstream procaspases, inducing apoptosis
Some (damaged or stressed) cells can kill themselves by production of both Fas ligand and Fas protein
