Herniation
- After degeneration begins, minor strains may cause displacement of NP
- The mass of the "slipped disc" can compress a spinal nerve
- Results in pain, loss of muscle control, muscle spasm
- High level of hydration in teenagers so herniation prevented
- Although elderly discs degenerated and have tears, herniation is rare due to dehydration of the NP
- Middle-aged people suffer most from herniation
