- First few decades:
- Abundant matrix synthesis
- Nucleus is increasingly hydrated
- NP and AF morphologically distinct
- After second decade:
- AF shows signs of degeneration
- Alteration in remodelling rates
- Fewer cells
- Fibres less distinct
- NP becomes fibrous
- Next few decades:
- NP dehydrated
- Increasingly fibrous in nature
- Loss of chondrocytes, more fibroblastic cells
