Degeneration

  • First few decades:
    • Abundant matrix synthesis
    • Nucleus is increasingly hydrated
    • NP and AF morphologically distinct
  • After second decade:
    • AF shows signs of degeneration
    • Alteration in remodelling rates
    • Fewer cells
    • Fibres less distinct
    • NP becomes fibrous
  • Next few decades:
    • NP dehydrated
    • Increasingly fibrous in nature
    • Loss of chondrocytes, more fibroblastic cells
