Typical bacteria
S. epidermis
- Second most common flora of the nose
- Commonly found on the skin
- Infection can lead to infection of the CNS
- Binds to fibronectin which is commonly adsorbed to implanted materials
- Produces a slime resulting in biofilm formation
- Predominantly teichoic acid (from cell wall)
- Primary cause of infection of polymeric implants e.g. joints, vascular grafts, catheters, contact lenses
