  • Phagocytose small parasites
  • Secrete cytokines

    • IL-1, IL-12, TNFα, CSFs activate other cells/stimulate proliferation

  • Secrete cytotoxic factors

    • ROIs generated after phagocytosis of T. cruzi, T. gondii, Leishmania spp, malarial parasites and schistosomes

    Nitric oxide also important in resistance to leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis and malaria

  • When activated by cytokines, ROI increase
  • Act as killer cells via antibody dependent cell mediated cytotoxicty (ADCC): IgG and IgE, enhance ability to kill schistosomules
