Haemocompatibility and thrombogenicity

Heparin releasing systems

Electric current is used to rapidly change the structural arrangement of an electroerodible polyelectrolyte complex (heparin + +vely charged polymer)

  • Polymer matrix dissolves in proportion to the intensity of the electric current
  • Current produces hydroxyl ions near cathode
  • Increases local pH
  • Disrupts ionic bonds of polymer
  • Releases heparin from surface
  • Alter pattern of current --> control release
