Haemocompatibility and thrombogenicity

Platelet aggregation

  1. Release of dense granule ADP
  2. Formation of thrombin
  3. Generation of thromboxane A2

Platelet stimulation causes activation of the GPIIb/IIIa receptors

Bind plasma proteins e.g fibrinogen causing bridging together

Thrombin binds platelets and causes:

  1. Platelet activation
  2. Produce more thrombin
  3. Stimulate ADP release and thromboxane A2
  4. Stimulate formation of fibrin which stabilises the thrombus
