Ries was born in Staffelstein in Germany in 1492. Though he did have some education in Zwickau, he did not attend any universities. However, during his life, Ries published quite a few books for engineers and scientists, one of them even contained division calculations, which was hardly known by that time. He was promoted court mathematician at the age of 47 and died 20 years after that.
