InterPore 2023; solid performance of IMPRES group

Interpore2023 has been a great conference to bring together researchers from all around the world with more than 1000 on-site and online attendees. Thanks to HeriotWatt University organising committee for making this conference a big success in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. IMPRES group also proactively contributed to this event by leading (MS22) Manufactured Porous Materials for Industrial Applications mini-symposium and giving 10 oral and poster presentations. Thanks to the whole team for their great effort.

Prof Vahid Niasar - President-Elect of InterPore

Prof Vahid Niasar has been elected as President-Elect of the International Society of Porous Media (InterPore) for two years starting May 2023 and will become InterPore President two years later. InterPore is a nonprofit independent scientific organization established in 2008. It has more than 1500 individual members and 48 institutional members. It has 17 national chapters https://www.interpore.org/activities/national-chapters/ and so far, have held 15 annual conferences in Europe, Asia and North America. It aims to advance and disseminate knowledge for the understanding, description, and modeling of natural and industrial porous medium systems. It acts as a platform for researchers active in modeling of flow and transport in natural, biological, and technical porous media, such as soils, aquifers, oil and gas reservoirs, biological tissues, plants, fuel cells, wood, ceramics, concrete, textiles, paper, polymer composites, hygienic materials, food, foams, membranes, etc.

IMPRES receives a large EPSRC grant on CCS

Vahid Niasar and collaborators receive £942k (£754k from EPSRC) for subsurface CO2 storage. The project, entitled Performance and Injectivity of CO2 in Hyper-Saline Aquifers - or PINCH - is in collaboration with Princeton University, the University of Stuttgart, bp, Shell, and Equinor. It represents an excellent research development in the discipline of subsurface energy engineering, and addresses major challenges faced in geological CO2 storage. Dr Vahid Niasar of Manchester’s Department of Chemical Engineering is Principal Investigator for the PINCH project, which aims to establish fundamental science to develop a novel predictive model and apply it to real field data supported by industries. A 20-month PDRA open position on MicroCT and microfluidic of Low Salinity Waterflooding

ACS Committee on the Petroleum Research Fund awarded $110,000 to Dr Vahid Niasar for the research project on “Microscale experimental investigation of Low Salinity Waterflooding". A Very Successful Diamond Light Source Beamtime at I12

IMPRES group and group of Prof Holger Steeb from University of Stuttgart performed very successful experiments in Diamond Light Source I12 on fast tomography of multiphase flow and transport in porous media. The Beam time experiments lasted 5 days and was funded by Diamond Light Source. The successful experimental research was the result of intensive collaboration of Dr Vahid Niasar (IMPRES), Prof Holger Steeb (Stuttgart U), Dr Nikolaos Karadimitriou (Stuttgart U), Dr Monika Walczak (IMPRES), Mr Sharul Hasan (IMPRES), Mr Mathias Ruf (Stuttgart U), Mr Hamidreza Erfani (IMPRES), Dr Thomas Connolley (Diamond) and Dr Nghia Vo (Diamond).

A new funding for research commercialisation

UKRI awarded £35k to Dr Vahid Niasar for commercialisation of pore-scale research in chemical and petroleum engineering application. Daniel Niblett has been intensively involved in visiting different relevant companies and experts around the world to identify the current challenges in modelling and characterisation of porous materials used in various industries.

InterPore UK Poster Award for Omar Godinez

Omar Godinez has successfuly won the best poster award in the 4th InterPore UK conference held in September 2018 in Aberdeen. Omar's research is focused on pore-scale CFD simulations of transport in charged porous media with applications to enhanced oil recovery.

A new PhD student joined IMPRES

Senyou An joined the IMPRES group to work on GPU acceleration of pore-scale modelling and hybrid modelling. Senyou has graduated from the MSc Petroleum Engineering of China University of Pertroleum (East China). He has received the President’s Doctoral Scholar Award from the University of Manchester.

A very successful international workshop on geothermal energy

Together with Dr Masoud Babaei, Dr Vahid Niasar organised a very well-received international workshop on geothermal energy at the University of Manchester on June 19th, 2018. It made an excellent opportunity for researchers from different universities and research institutes to exchange their research ideas and outcomes on subsurface energy applications. Special thanks to the internationally-renowned invited speakers Prof Mike Celia (Princeton University, USA), Prof Rainer Helmig (Stuttgart University, Germany), Prof Günter Zimmermann (GFZ Potsdam, Germany) and Dr Denis Voskov (TU Delft, Netherlands) and Dr Robert Westaway (University of Glasgow, UK) for their excellent talks and discussions. The workshop was sponsored by CUHK-UoM Research Fund 2017-18.

Dr Vahid Niasar gave two oral talks in the 80th EAGE Annual Conference and Exhibition 2018, Copenhagen, Denmark, June 11-14, 2018. Vahid gave two talks on "Pore-Scale Modelling of Mixing and Wettability Alteration and its Impact on Multi-Phase Flow" and "MicroCT X-Ray Imaging of Hydrodynamic Dispersion under Steady-State Two-Phase Flow" which were based on collaborative research between IMPRES group and University of Stuttgart and Diamond Light Source.

A warm welcome to Dr Monika Walczak

Dr Monika Walczak joined the IMPRES group to work on the MITRA project, funded by EPSRC EP/R021627/1. Dr Monika S. Walczak received her Ph.D. in physics from the Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences. She joined the University of Manchester as Research Associate to work on the industrial projects related to corrosion inhibition in oil and gas field. Currently she is working on imaging the flow mechanism in porous media. Her research interest include experimental and theoretical methods of material structure determination by means of X-ray photon/photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray imaging.

Prof Rainer Helmig visit to the IMPRES Group

IMPRES group is extremely pleased with hosting Prof Rainer Helmig from Stuttgart University in 13-15th of November 2017. Professor Helmig is the head of the Department of Hydromechanics and Modelling of Hydrosystems at Stuttgart University. He has more than 200 research publications in different computational fields of porous media including hydrogeology, reservoir engineering, and fuel cell. He has been awarded NGWA Darcy Lecturer 2015 and von Humboldt Stiftungspreis 2012 among many others. Professor Helmig is the PI of several multi-million Euro projects funded by DFG which created significant research impacts on computational methods for porous media applications. He is the author of "Multiphase Flow and Transport Processes in the Subsurface" being taught in several universities worldwide. Professor Helmig gave a talk in the colloquium series of “Porous Media: from Theory to Application“ on “Numerical models of evaluating the competitive use of the subsurface: the influence of energy storage and production in groundwater” on November 14th, 2017.

International graduate students visit the IMPRES group

The PhD students Mr. Thomas Sweijen (Utrecht University) and Mr. Kilian Weishaupt (Stuttgart University) visited the IMPRES group in November 2017. Thomas has done extensive research on pore-scale modelling of flow in deformable porous media and Kilian has developed a novel pore-scale model to couple free flow and porous media flow.

A very successful beamtime experiment at Diamond Light Source at I12

Sharul Hasan (IMPRES), Nikos Karadimitriou (IMPRES) and Vahid Niasar in collaboration with Jose Godinho (HMXIF), Holger Steeb (Stuttgart University) and David Uribe (Stuttgart University) performed 4D micro-tomography imaging of dynamic two-phase flow in I12 beamline at the Diamond Light Source from 28 June to 3 July. The experiments were carried out very successfully and soon you will hear more about the research outputs. Thanks to Holger for his great support to this project.

A New Project

On 1st December 2016, the DMC Peer Review panel met to consider proposals submitted for AP21, including IMPRES proposal submitted by Vahid J Niasar, Jose Godinho, and Nikos Karadimitriou. The proposal has been awarded 15 shifts on I12 in Diamond Light Source Facilities to implement 4D imaging of flow in porous media. This project is in close collaboration with Prof. Holger Steeb, Stuttgart Umniversity.

IMPRES launched a new colloquium series on "Porous Media: from theory to applications"

The Integrated Multiscale Porous Media Research Group, School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, has initiated a new Colloquium Series on “Porous Media: from Theory to Application”. The skills and subjects researched across CEAS, SEES, MACE, and Mathematics have significant synergy which has not been fully explored. As such, we are keen to arrange a monthly Colloquium. The purpose will be to present on-going research and help forge new collaborations in the hope that this will enhance research across Schools at the University of Manchester and external institutes. Dan has worked on Arsenic groundwater contamination and he is going to apply his knowledge to modelling of soil phosphorus sorption and its impact on crop production in sub-Saharan Africa.

Prof. Majid Hassanizadeh from Utrecht University visits the IMPRES team from March 16th to 18th. Majid is an internationally renowned scientist with major achievements such as Elected Fellow of American Geophysical Union in 2002; Elected Fellow of American Association for Advancement of Science in 2007;Received honorary degree of Doctor-Ingenieur from Stuttgart University, 2008; A recipient of von Humboldt Prize, 2010; Recipient of Don and Betty Kirkham Soil Physics Award, 2011; Selected as 2012 Darcy Lecturer by the US National Groundwater Association, 2011. Awarded a research grant of 2.3 MEuro by the European Research Council. Recipient of Royal medal of honor of The Netherlands, July 2015. Sharul holds an MSc degree in Petroleum Geoscience in Reservoir Development and Production from the University of Manchester. He started his PhD in January 2016, fully funded by Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE). The objective of his PhD research is to investigate the 'Pore-Scale Reactive Transport and Mixing in Porous Media in the Context of Enhanced Oil Recovery'.

This allows a fully funded PhD project for 3.5 years for UK/EEA citizen applicants starting september 2016.

Two new PhD students in IMPRES team

A warm welcome to two new PhD students in IMPRES team, Rimsha and Omar! Within the CONACYT program funded by Mexican National Council for Science and Technology, Mr Omar Godinez joined IMPRES team in September 2015 to start his PhD study. Omar's PhD project is “the pore-scale computational analysis of enhanced oil recovery methods”. Also Miss Rimsha Aziz just started her PhD study in November 2015 in IMPRES team. Rimsha will investigate “wettability alteration of rocks using engineered brine composition for enhanced oil recovery”. Rimsha succeeded to get the prestigeous full 3-year PhD scholarship from CEAS.

InterPore UK Chapter Kick-off Meeting

Best MEng Dissertation Prize

Congratulations to Mohammed Issa on winning the best MEng dissertation project prize in Petroleum Engineering Programme. Mohammed worked on flow properties of mixed wet rocks using pore-network modelling under supervision of with Vahid J Niasar.

Based on the reviews submitted by students, Vahid J. Niasar has got the highest teaching score in the first semester of 2014/15 at the school of chemical engineering and analytical science, with the average of 4.9 out of 5. Vahid taught "Reservoir Performance and Management" for petroleum engineering programme.
