lecture 1: self-test

return to lesson 1 index

read this first

Each of the 11 lectures has a self-test. None of them form part of your assessment for this course and it is not compulsory to complete them. They are here as a way for you to check your progress each week. With lectures - whether real or virtual - it is not always the case that your understanding of the material matches what the lecturer thinks (or knows) is important. For whatever reason, you may have skipped over something which will become vital later in the course. These tests can act as a check on your knowledge.

In each case there are one or more practical things which you should have done (or know you can do) at this point. You will also be asked half a dozen multiple-choice questions on which you will get instant feedback. (Because of the way this site works you have to follow a second link to see these questions.) Of course, there is nothing stopping you moving on to the next lecture if you get all the questions wrong, but it might be a warning that perhaps you need to return to the teaching materials and study them a little more closely!

Note that the answers to these questions can all be found in the online material for a particular lecture. Sometimes the answers are in the "virtual lectures", sometimes the other pages and sometimes both.

practical skills - lecture 1

By the end of lecture 1 you should:

  • have created a "www" folder on your M: drive (note: only applicable to Leeds University students)
  • have copied the basic web page template (available on the lecture handout) into Notepad and saved this file on your home drive (in the www folder if you have one)
  • be able to make simple changes to the text of this web page, and review these changes in the browser.

If you are unsure about any of these things, practise until you are. Remember you can ask an ACOM demonstrator for help: that is what they are there for.
