Group Leader
My name is Dr Claudia Lindner. I am a Sir Henry Dale Fellow and Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Informatics, Imaging & Data Sciences at The University of Manchester.
My drive and motivation comes from my passion to make a difference to people’s lives.
My research interests are in the automated analysis of medical images to study, diagnose and manage musculoskeletal disorders. I use methods from computer vision, machine learning and data science to develop accurate systems for outlining and analysing structures in widely used medical images such as radiographs.
The overall goal of my research is to transform clinically collected image data into useful medical information to benefit healthcare at individual and societal levels.
In my role as the Translation Lead for the Christabel Pankhurst Institute I focus on making research translation an integral part of health technology research, aiming to facilitate and improve the translation of research findings into benefits for society.

Projects
Improving the management and outcome of knee replacement surgery
We are developing a software tool to automatically analyse radiographic image information, clinical and patient-reported data to improve the management and outcome of knee replacement surgery, aiming to identify signs of poor outcome.
Automatically assessing hip migration in children with Cerebral Palsy
We are developing a computer system to support the assessment of hip migration in children with Cerebral Palsy. The ultimate goal is to automatically populate the CPIP database, introducing consistency and saving time in taking/recording the measurements.
Studying the shape of the hip and knee joints to explain common musculoskeletal diseases
We are developing tools to automatically analyse the hip and knee DXA scans taken as part of the UK Biobank imaging enhancement study.
Exploring automatically derived radiographic features of the Charcot Neuropathic Foot
We are investigating the application of machine learning techniques to derive radiographic features that could be suggestive for the early diagnosis as well as prognosis estimation of the Charcot Neuropathic Foot.
Automatically analysing wound histology biopsies
We are developing a deep learning framework to automatically analyse tissue types in wound histology biopsies, aiming to facilitate wound healing research.
Automating cephalometric tracing in orthodontics
We are developing machine learning methods to automatically locate cephalometric landmarks in 2D lateral cephalograms.
Automatically analysing skeletal structures in medical images
We are developing robust and accurate systems for locating the outlines of bones and other structures in widely used medical images such as radiographs.
Making research translation an integral part of health technology research
We are developing tools and guidance on how to translate health technology research findings into benefits for society.
