Waves propagating over a submerged cylinder

Prof. Norman Riley, School of Mathematics, University of East Anglia

The fluid flow induced when free-surface travelling waves propagate over a submerged circular cylinder is considered. The inviscid-flow problem is addressed first by an expansion in powers of the wave amplitude, which is assumed to be small. The results at second order confirm those obtained by earlier workers; and excellent agreement with recent experiments is obtained for the instantaneous, and time-averaged, free-surface profiles. The time-averaged flow at second order is not unique. As a consequence calculations for a viscous fluid have been carried out over a wide range of Reynolds number. These enable the loading on the cylinder to be compared with earlier experiments. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is again recorded.
