Some high-Reynolds-number flows with two or more small scales.

This seminar discusses the asymptotic structure of various high-Re internal flows with closed streamlines. Both steady and time-periodic flows are considered. The linking theme is that in each problem there are at least two competing boundary layer thicknesses, with the global flow structure changing according to their relative size. Thus as well as the viscous boundary layer, there is

(a) the skin-depth for electromagnetically driven liquid metal flows,

(b) a Wormesley number for pulsatile flows such as occur in haemodynamics, or

(c) a shape parameter for rotating flow in a nearly cylindrical column.

In each problem the core flow is fully determined only by the condition that the boundary layers should be periodic and separation can be avoided.
