On the Hydrodynamic Blowup Problem

Prof. Richard B. Pelz
Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Rutgers University, USA
(currently at the Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge)

Whether all smooth, 3-D, divergence-free, fluid flows remain smooth for all time under the Navier-Stokes or Euler equations is a fundamental open question in mathematical fluid mechanics. In this talk, possible counter-examples, unforced flows in which quantities such as vorticity become singular in finite time, will be presented.
