LMS Prospects in Mathematics

Are you considering applying for Ph.D. studies in mathematics for entry in 2012? If yes, this meeting is for you!

About the meeting:

The meeting is aimed at students across the UK considering applying for Ph.D. studies in Mathematics for entry in 2012. The conference has the goal to introduce the many and varied opportunities for research in pure and applied mathematics that exist in universities in the UK. Speakers will share their passion about mathematical research by describing the type of questions they are working on, and will discuss where their research topic is being actively studied in the UK. Moreover, information about the Doctoral Training Centers in Mathematical Sciences and funding opportunities will be available. The event will be in Bristol on 16-17 December 2011 and will be sponsored by the London Mathematical Society. The talks will be on the afternoon of Friday 16 December and the morning of Saturday 17 December. The conference dinner on Friday evening will provide the opportunity to interact wtih the speakers.

Location and practical information:

The event will be held in Bristol at the School of Mathematics of the University of Bristol, University Walk, Bristol, BS8 1TW.
The Main building of the Maths Department is number 29 on the campus map. Lectures will be in room SM1 (on the first floor, follow the signs) and start at 1.15pm.
The registration desk will open at 12.30pm.

The most convenient stations to arrive in to are:
Train - Temple Meads station
Coach - City Centre Coach Station
Megabus - City Centre, Colston Hall

How to participate:

Funding is available to cover the costs for around 50 participants for accommodation for one night and to help cover the cost of travelling to Bristol. All applicants are automatically considered for funding. To apply to attend, email prospects-in-maths@bristol.ac.uk with a subject heading "Prospects Application" and include evidence of the degree classification you are on track to receive (this could include a transcript or letter from member of staff at you institution) and include a statement that "I am on track academically to begin Ph.D. studies in 2012" or explain why you should attend if this is not the case. To receive full consideration for funding, your application needs to be received by the:

Application Deadline: Wednesday, November 23rd 2011 Funding decisions will be made shortly thereafter. Accomodation will be provided in shared hotel rooms with twin beds and ensuite bathroom. Please specify your gender in the application and let the organizers know if you want to share with a particular participant or if you wish to make your own accomodation arrangements. Late applications are considered at the discretion of the organizers.
