Your stay in Peyresq

Peyresq is a tiny village situated at 1500m above sea level. While it should be warm during the day, it can get quite cold after sunset, so you should bring a warm sweater. And in spite of being the ``South of France'', it is not uncommon for it to be wet and windy in September - even at sea level.

You will be staying in rooms in small town houses, most rooms having two or three beds, and a bathroom. Our hosts, the Fondation Peiresc supply three good (very good) meals a day, and plenty of coffee/tea/soft drinks.

There is no scientific library, and indeed no library at all. In fact one of the attractions is that there is no supermarket, no petrol station, no motorway, no gift shop: in short, nothing but us! Other than Mathematics, the only pastime is walking or hiking - and there's plenty of that, so bring good walking shoes/boots.

The nearest town of any size is Annot (permanent population 1200, but a lot more in the summer), which has several restaurants and bars, a railway station and a hotel or two. However, unless you have a car at your disposal it is not possible to get there except in an emergency.

Contact numbers at Peyresq:

Tel: (+ 33) (0)4 92 83 37 32
Fax: (+ 33) (0)4 92 83 37 67

There is a public phone in the main square, and there is one internet connection for use by participants.

Tourism

You may like to visit the area either before or after the Summer School, so I have collected a few web-sites that you might find useful. I have not succeeded in finding a map on the web which shows Peyresq.

Hotels in Nice

You may need to stay the night before or the night after in a hotel in Nice. There are of course many such hotels, and September should not be too bad for finding a room. A hotel that is often used for visitors to the Maths department is the Hotel Notre Dame (Tel: (+33) (0)4 93 88 70 44), which costs about 300FF/night. There are also cheaper (and seedier!) hotels near the station. It will not be possible for the grant to reimburse hotel expenses in Nice.
