Applications are invited for this 36 month European Commission funded post, which is part of the Research Training Network "Mechanics and Symmetry in Europe" (MASIE). The post holder is expected to take the position by February 2001.
The student will work on geometric aspects of the dynamics of affine rigid bodies models at IST under the supervision of Prof. Waldyr Oliva and Dr. E. Sousa Dias. Initially the work will focus on the stability and bifurcations of relative equilibria and relative periodic orbits of holonomic and non-holonomic affine rigid body models. Applications to particular models from astrophysics, elasticity and fluid dynamics will also be explored. The project will be co-supervised by Dr. M. Roberts (Warwick, UK) and Dr. J. Montaldi (Nice, FR), and forms part of Section 4 of the MASIE project.
The research program suggests that the student should have some familiarity with geometric aspects of the theory of Hamiltonian systems with symmetries and its applications. Preference will be given to those who have a Master degree in an area related to the research project.
