Immortalised cell lines
- Cell division in culture is finite
- Due to shortening of telomeres - DNA sequences and
proteins which cap ends of chromosomes
- Human somatic cells have telomerase enzyme turned off
- Maintains telomeres, therefore without it, they progressively
shorten
- Can make cells proliferate indefinately by introducing telomerase
