Differentiation and Development 2

Precise timing of developmental events is maintained by ability of certain groups of cells to induce/activate differentiation of another group of cells

Induction is mediated by:

  • Direct cell contact
  • Soluble factors released by cells

Different cells express different sets of genes based on:

  • Developmental history
  • Patterns of cell division
  • Position in developing organism
  • Interactions with other cells
