- Produces ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs)
- rRNAs produced and assembled into ribosomes
- Nucleolus is NOT membrane bound
- Aggregate of macromolecules:
- rRNA genes
- Ribosomal protein subunits
- Partly assembled ribosomes
- rRNA genes also involved in formation of nucleolus
- Nucleolus size depends on number of ribosomes it produces
