There are 2 types of self-assembly
- Intramolecular self-assembly
- Polymers with the ability to fold from a random conformation into a well-defined stable structure
- E.g. protein folding (secondary, tertiary structure)
- Intermolecular self-assembly
- Ability of (small) molecules to form supramolecular assemblies (quarternary structure)
- E.g. Formation of a lipid bilayer in aqueous solution
