Self-assembly

There are 2 types of self-assembly

  • Intramolecular self-assembly
    • Polymers with the ability to fold from a random conformation into a well-defined stable structure
    • E.g. protein folding (secondary, tertiary structure)
  • Intermolecular self-assembly
    • Ability of (small) molecules to form supramolecular assemblies (quarternary structure)
    • E.g. Formation of a lipid bilayer in aqueous solution
