- Mass transfer occurs via molecular diffusion
- No fluid flow at surface of construct
- In mixed flasks:
- Mass transfer is by convection
- Fluid flow at surface is turbulent
- In rotating vessels:
- Mass transfer is by convection due to settling
- Fluid flow is laminar
- In perfused columns and chambers:
- Mass transfer is by convection due to recirculation
- Fluid flow is laminar
