Respiratory functions of blood
- In cell culture we must replenish the medium regularly
- Blood perfusion through bone marrow is 0.08ml per cc per minute
- Cellularity in bone marrow is 500 million cells per cc
- Cell specific perfusion rate is 2.3 ml/107 cells/day
- Ideally want to mimic in vivo perfusion rates
- Cell cultures often contain 1 million cells per ml containing 20% serum
- So 10 million cells in 10 mls
- A daily medium exchange would result in replacing the serum at 2ml/107 cells/day which is similar to the number above
