Respiratory functions of blood

  • In cell culture we must replenish the medium regularly
  • Blood perfusion through bone marrow is 0.08ml per cc per minute
  • Cellularity in bone marrow is 500 million cells per cc
  • Cell specific perfusion rate is 2.3 ml/107 cells/day
  • Ideally want to mimic in vivo perfusion rates
  • Cell cultures often contain 1 million cells per ml containing 20% serum
  • So 10 million cells in 10 mls
  • A daily medium exchange would result in replacing the serum at 2ml/107 cells/day which is similar to the number above
