What signals the endothelial cells to invade?
VEGF: vascular endothelial growth factor
- VEGF production is controlled through increase in mRNA
- Shortage of oxygen causes increase in HIF-1: hypoxia inducible factor 1
- HIF stimulates transcription of VEGF gene
- VEGF protein is secreted, diffuses through the tissue and acts on nearby endothelial cells
