Adhesion

Materials have many binding sites, areas of high energy, or oxide layers which act as catalytic sites for molecular and cellular activities

Binding is species specific, S. epidermidis prefer hydrophobic surfaces

Within 1nm of the surface: ionic, hydrogen and covalent bonding

Initial attachment (reversible non-specific) depends on:

  • Physical characteristics of the bacteria
  • Fluid interface
  • Substrate

After attachment, specific irreversible adhesion may occur:

  • Chemical binding
  • Hydrophobic interactions
  • Specific receptor-ligand interactions

Bacterial appendages may interact with surfaces at distances >15nm bridging repulsive forces
