Implant associated infection
Treatment
- Biofilm: protected against host defence and systemic antibiotics - removal of implant and infection
- Immediate (within first 3 weeks) - irrigation and debridement, systemic antibiotics
- Late infection - removal of implant and infection
- Reimplantion of new implant? Only after severe debridement and
removal of all traces of implant. Preferably antibiotic-loaded implant
- Severe bone loss, secondary implant needed
- Problem - is there enough tissue left?
- Megaprosthesis
- Last resort = amputation
