Pathogens 2: Bacteria

Lymphocyte independent responses

  • Activation of complement (alternative pathway)

    1. Bacterial cell killing
    2. Release of C3a and C5a - mast cell degranulation
    3. C5a attracts and activates neutrophils
    4. Vascular permeability
    5. Opsonisation

  • Chemotaxis
  • Attracts more immune cells to the site of infection via complement or bacterial molecules and chemokines triggered by PAMPs.

  • Macrophage release of cytokines
  • E.g. TNF and IL-1

    1. Activation of phagocytic cells
    2. Increased adhesion to endothelium
    3. Enter into inflamed tissue
    4. Increase motility of leucocytes

  • NK release of cytokines
  • E.g. IFN
