Haemocompatibility and thrombogenicity
Heparin containing bioactive surfaces
- Repeating disaccharide unit of D-glucosamine and uronic acid
- Uronic acid = D-glucoronic acid or L-iduronic acid
- Some hydroxyl groups are sulphated
- Therefore highly negatively charged
- Central D-glucosamine residue contains a unique 3-O-sulfate moiety
- Elimination of sulphate groups decreases anticoagulant activity
- Removal of unique 3-O sulphate = complete loss of anticoagulant activity
