Haemocompatibility and thrombogenicity

Heparin containing bioactive surfaces

  • Repeating disaccharide unit of D-glucosamine and uronic acid
  • Uronic acid = D-glucoronic acid or L-iduronic acid
  • Some hydroxyl groups are sulphated
  • Therefore highly negatively charged
  • Central D-glucosamine residue contains a unique 3-O-sulfate moiety
  • Elimination of sulphate groups decreases anticoagulant activity
  • Removal of unique 3-O sulphate = complete loss of anticoagulant activity
