Embolism

Pulmonary

Occlusion of large or medium pulmonary artery is usually embolic

  • 95% arise from thrombi in large veins of lower legs
    1. Popliteal
    2. Femoral
    3. Iliac
  • Depending on size the embolism may:
    1. Occlude pulmonary artery
    2. Impact astride the bifurcation
    3. Pass into progessively smaller branching pulmonary arteries
