Non-mathematical interests

Here is a list in no particular order.

• Hedgehogs and cacti (icluding hedgehog cacti).
• Classical music. I have a reasonable collection of CDs and tapes.
• Books. I like to read books in the original language.
• Languages. I can speak Hungarian, English, German, Spanish and Catalan fluently and I also speak some Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian and Japanese. Some useful Catalan resources:
  • Multilingual (Catalan/Spanish/English/French/German) dictionary
  • Online and downloadable English-Catalan and Catalan-English dictionaries, conjugation of verbs
  • The Grand Dictionary of the Catalan Language (monolingual)
  • Smaller and simpler monolingual dictionary
• Puzzles. I enjoy all sorts mathematical, logical and word puzzles. I am quite good at Hungarian crossword puzzles, and I can even do some cryptic English crosswords.
• Games. I can play various card games, including ulti, tarokk, Doppelkopf and bridge (badly). I am also a keen Mah-Jongg player.
• Scottish country dancing. I started dancing at the Cambridge University Strathspey & Reel Club, and then I just continued in Bonn, Salt Lake City and Manchester. I am a member of the Manchester Scottish Dancers and I have the preliminary teacher's certificate.
• Travelling. I have travelled extensively in the western United States. I visited most national parks west of the line connecting western North Dakota to western Texas. Here are some of my favourites:

  Other places I have visited and liked include San Francisco, Nashville and New Orleans.

• Skiing. I learned to ski at Brighton, Utah, and I skied at all the resorts in the Wasatch Canyons and in Park City.
