- Proteins that bind along the sides of the polymer filament can
alter stability and mechanical properties
- Filament associated proteins use their binding energy to lower or
raise the free energy of the polymer state, causing stabilisation or
destabilisation
- Microtubule associated proteins (MAPs)
- Tropomyosin stabilise actin
- Cofilin destabilises actin
