Practical Information

Outdoors

Manchester has a reputation for high rainfall. This is well-deserved, so bring an umbrella! However, early September is often quite dry, so fingers crossed.

There will be excursions on the Wednesday afternoon. Depending on weather this will include an option for a walk in the Peak District, which can be muddy (see above) so come prepared.

Food

On Monday, as part of the Heilbronn Day there will be a buffet lunch. On the other days people will be left to their own devices – there are plenty of options available, including a university canteen.

Burkhardt House is near the start of the “Curry Mile”, which is famous for its, er, curries. If you walk to Oxford Road from Burkhardt House and turn left you will see it (confusingly Oxford Road becomes Wilmslow Road at this point). There are also places to eat and drink around Oxford Road, and in the city centre. Please feel free to ask Charles Eaton or any of the other locals for advice on where to go.

On Thursday  5th September there will be a conference banquet in Christies Bistro.

Local Attractions

Whitworth Art Gallery, near Burkhardt house, is well worth a visit, as is the Manchester Museum, which is in the centre of the university. In the city centre, amongst other things there is the Manchester Art Gallery and the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), although the latter may form part of the excursion.

Contacts

Radha Kessar and Markus Linckelmann will be arriving at Burkhardt house on the 1st September and staying there, so hopefully they’ll be able to cope with any immediate difficulties. Charles Eaton is the principal local contact – phone number 07786 032194 (home number 01457 891381). Please don’t hesitate to contact Charles if there is a problem.
