Directions to Burkhardt House and the Alan Turing Building
Burkhardt House is located off of Oxford Place, and shares an entrance with Hulme Hall. It is about 20 minutes walk south of the centre of the university, which in turn is south of the centre of Manchester.
Check in is normally after 2pm, and is in the reception of Hulme Hall. If you plan to arrive earlier than this or late in the evening then please let Charles Eaton know so that arrangements can be made. All linen is provided, and rooms are all ensuite (information otherwise that you may find on the internet is intended for students, not guests!) Breakfast is included.
On arrival you should go to reception, which serves both Hulme Hall and Burkhardt House. We are arranging for this to be staffed for as long as possible in the evening, but they are well prepared for arrivals after reception closes. There are instructions next to the door to reception which give you a number to call for the duty tutor, and there is an intercom there for you to use for this. Most people will probably be taking a taxi to Burkhardt House. In case the driver doesn't know this residence, it is on Oxford Place, in the Victoria Park campus. They may be more familiar with Hulme Hall.
Here’s a link to a map:
Oxford Place is the continuation of Rusholme Place, which is off of Oxford Road opposite a corner of Whitworth Park.
It’s between two major roads: Oxford Road (where the centre of the university is located) and Upper Brook Street. Oxford Road is a major bus route, and all services that run along Oxford Road (except the 147) will take you between the University and the turn-off for Rusholme Place (see http://www.tfgm.com/journey_planning/Pages/Maps.aspx for maps of bus routes, but buses are 41, 42, 42A, 43, 44, 53, 142, 143, 145, 157, X41, X57). The 147 bus goes from outside Piccadilly Station to quite close to Burkhardt House.
From Manchester Airport
Manchester airport is not that close to the university, and so it can be quite expensive to take a random taxi (at least £25). There is however a taxi company, Arrow Cars, which is based at Manchester airport, and which will give you a fixed price (between £20 and £25, depending on which terminal you're travelling from). Arrow Cars has desks in all terminals, and you can order a taxi from there. To do so, remember to bring the postcode for you destination; for Burkhardt House this is M14 5RR.
See the link: http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/manweb.nsf/Content/arrowtaxi
There are also very frequent trains from the airport to both Manchester Piccadilly Station (Manchester’s main train station) and Manchester Oxford Road Station. There are lots of buses running past Oxford Road Station heading up Oxford Road (see above).
By Train
The main station in Manchester is Manchester Piccadilly Station. It’s slightly tricky getting buses from here, as most buses go from Piccadilly Gardens, 5-10 minutes walk away. There is a 147 service running from the station to the University, but this doesn’t quite go as far as Rusholme Place. There are plenty of taxies at Piccadilly Station, which you can access via the Fairfield Street Entrance.
It is also possible to go to Manchester Oxford Road Station, from where there are lots of buses running along Oxford Road to near Burkhardt House (look out for Whitworth Park and Art Gallery on your right – you should get off at the far end of the park). There are also taxies available at Oxford Road Station.
By Car
There is free parking on a first-come first-served basis at Burkhardt Hall/Hulme Hall. There are two carparks: you should be able to park in the spaces at the front of the building (10 spaces); if these spaces are full, ask in the reception area and someone will open up the carpark at the back of the building (30 spaces).
There is a multi-storey carpark near the Alan Turing Building, on Booth Street East, which is pay-and-display.
The Alan Turing Building
The conference will take place in the Alan Turing Building. This is about a mile from Burkhardt House via Oxford Road (you can also go via Upper Brook Street, but this is not scenic!). Directions from Burkhardt House here:
If you go via Oxford Road, then look out for University Place, which is a huge metal cyclinder. Turn right at this and you will be in a large open area with the Alan Turing on the far side. The entrance is very discreet and is underneath a bridge between two `fingers’ of the building.
Registration will be in the Alan Turing Building from 10:30.
